About the Artist – G.M. Urban
G.M. Urban was born in Long Beach, California, and has lived in several artistically influential places, including Coronado, California, and Oahu, Hawaiʻi, before finally settling in Kansas. Each location, culture, and landscape has added depth to an ever-evolving creative style.
Working in mixed media, G.M. Urban creates artworks through a signature process developed alongside collaborator Chris. This one-of-a-kind method is both intricate and labor-intensive, involving numerous layers that can take up to a full year to complete. The result is a striking fusion of painting and sculpture—a dimensional art form built directly onto canvas.
Every piece offers a bold visual experience, rich with texture, color, and depth. The layered construction invites viewers to explore the artwork from multiple angles, discovering new details within every fold, ridge, and contour.
Although largely self-taught, G.M. Urban refined foundational skills through community art programs in Hawaiʻi and at the University of Hawaiʻi. These influences are felt throughout the work: organic movement, layered storytelling, and a sense of place rooted in nature and emotion.
